Bengal Raj Exclusive Indian Cuisine

About Us

Kutub Uddin Ahmed, the father of the four brothers, was in the catering industry for almost 35 years. His restaurant, the Noor Jahan was opened in the 1950s and was one of the first few Indian restaurants in London. The four brothers Saleh, Musleh, Muflay and Tufayel Ahmed decided to settle in the South West in the city of Bristol. They established their first restaurant, the well known British Raj, in 1982 before selling it almost 15 years later.

In 1998, the four brothers opened the Bengal Raj. The name of the restaurant was chosen after the Royal Bengal Tiger, a subspecies of tiger primarily found in Bangladesh and India. It is one of the largest subspecies of tiger and is the national animal of India and Bangladesh. The second name Raj, comes from the Sanskrit work rajan, which means ruler or king. The name ‘Bengal Raj’ thus translates to ‘King Bengal’, paying tribute to the extraordinary animal, the Royal Bengal Tiger.

The main restaurant seats 48 and is available for small parties subject to booking and availability. We also cater for business and private parties as well as conferences and weddings.
